In the heart of Uganda’s coffee-growing region, a transformative movement is underway—led by women and fueled by community.
Meridah Nandudu, founder of Bayaaya Specialty Coffee, is empowering women farmers in Sironko District by ensuring they receive fair compensation and recognition for their labor. Traditionally, while women have been the backbone of coffee cultivation, they often missed out on the profits. Bayaaya changes that by offering higher prices for coffee delivered by women and providing seasonal bonuses.
Since 2022, Bayaaya’s network has expanded from a few dozen to over 600 women—now representing 75% of its registered farmers. This shift not only boosts household incomes but also fosters greater financial inclusion and harmony within families.
As Uganda’s coffee industry continues to thrive, with exports reaching over $1.3 billion, initiatives like Bayaaya ensure that women are not just participants but leaders in this success story.
